Chaos Computer Club claims to have "hacked" the iPhone 5s fingerprint sensor

Top of Form
The biometrics team of Germany's well-known Chaos Computer Club (CCC) claims it has "cracked" Apple's Touch ID system.
Touch ID is the fingerprint sensor and the associated software that provides a biometric lock for the brand new iPhone 5s.
Fingerprint readers have been common add-ons to laptops for many years, but never really caught on.
Here's why.
Firstly, fingerprints aren't secret.
All of us inadvertently leave good-quality prints on many surfaces, such as glass, metal and hard plastics.
Additionally (in many countries in the post-9/11 world) many of us deliberately, often unavoidably, have allowed the authorities, our employers and even businesses such as banks to take high-quality copies of our prints, and to keep them pretty much for ever.
Secondly, you can't change fingerprints if there's a breach, like you can an ephemeral password.
Thirdly, fingerprint sensor technology has been found wanting in the past, with glue, gelatin and even photocopies with a very thick layer of toner being used as copies that would pass muster as a real finger.
Fourthly, when you're logging into your laptop, being able to use your fingerprint doesn't add an awful lot of convenience.
You've already got a perfectly servicable keyboard in front of you when you open up your laptop, on which you are probably going to type your username anyway, so why not just stick with what you know: a typed-in password?
Fifthly, there's something unappealing to many people about using biometric data such as fingerprints, DNA or retina scans for anything but the most serious matters of identification.
Biometric objections typically lie somewhere between the visceral and the spiritual, which makes them hard to quantify.
But it is perfectly understandable (laudable, even) to be uneasy about using "something you are" as a way of identifying yourself, especially if it's merely to use a piece of computer hardware you already own outright.
Nevertheless, despite these objections, Apple's Touch ID is supposed to be - may yet still be! - the biometric implementation that will change all this.
It's built in to the new iPhone 5s, right in the button you press to start everything up anyway; it seems to work reliably, so it doesn't lock you out all the time; and it doesn't store digital copies of your fingerprints centrally where they might leak to the world in a data breach.
Better yet, it means you don't need to type in a complicated password on the iPhone's fiddly on-screen keyboard.
Best of all, it works conveniently even for people who would rather do without a regular passcode altogether, so for many users, it might succeed entirely on the basis that "something's better than nothing."
As Apple itself very proudly points out on its website:
You check your iPhone dozens and dozens of times a day, probably more. Entering a passcode each time just slows you down. But you do it because making sure no one else has access to your iPhone is important. With iPhone 5s, getting into your phone is faster, easier, and even a little futuristic. Introducing Touch ID — a new fingerprint identity sensor.
Put your finger on the Home button, and just like that your iPhone unlocks. It’s a convenient and highly secure way to access your phone. Your fingerprint can also approve purchases from iTunes Store, the App Store, and the iBooks Store, so you don’t have to enter your password.
The only fly in the ointment now is that it looks as though Touch ID isn't "highly secure," after all.
It's perhaps not as futuristic as Apple thought, either: the CCC hackers say that they used a technique documented in CCC materials back in 2004.
Greatly simplified, the fingerprint cloning process works like this:
  • Take a hi-res (2400dpi) photograph of the fingerprint.
  • Digitally invert the image so that the valleys of the print are black.
  • Laser print (1200dpi) the image with a very thick toner setting.
  • Smear white woodglue (or latex) over the printout and allow to set.
  • Carefully peel off the glue or latex sheet.
  • Breathe on the surface so it's slightly moist and conductive.
  • Unlock phone.
So last decade!
The really intriguing aspect of the claim is that the CCC guys didn't start with a photograph taken directly from a finger, which would typically require some sort of co-operation (or heavy inebriation) on the part of the victim.
They say that they used:
...the fingerprint of the phone user, photographed from a glass surface.
The next question is, will they, can they, claim the crowdsourced prizes on offer for doing what they say they did?
And the final question: should you use Touch ID?
I'm the wrong person to ask, because I'd probably say, "No!" on the basis of point 5 alone - a visceral sense that I'd simply rather not do so, especially since I know how to type perfectly well.
My advice, then, is to consider points 1, 2 and 3 above.
If you're happy in the face of those objections, and you aren't fussed by point 5, then...
Is it better not to have passcode at all!

BlackBerry Struggling, cuts up to 39% of workforc

It seems more recent androids are gradually pushing Blackberry ltd to extinction.

It's already in the news that Blackberry are laying off up to 39% of its workforce.
This is largely due to dwindling sales.

The company failed to make some innovations when there were obvious signs of
strong competition. Now they are about to take BBM to Android...
Is it too late?

What happened to Mourinho?

Chelsea 1 - Basel 2.
That's quiet strange. Is Jose Mourinho loosing his wits already? With a vast array of talent and bags of money, Chelsea were taken to the cleaners by average Everton and to make matters more glaring than suspicious, they were slapped with a defeat at their corridor by not very glamorous FC Basel of Switzerland.
What does the 'Happy one' have to say? Or should he return to being the 'Special one'.
After the lose, He said "we lost three point we must get somewhere else..."

Happy one has lost the Super cup, beaten by Everton with a new coach and short of Fellaini, Harassed and beaten by Basel...
Are we going to see a bouncing back?
The Special one is a 'cat with nine lives'. Happy one - cat with 3 lives or 10 or 21?
Time will tell...
But what happened?

Cristiano Ronaldo

CR7 CAN'T STOP SCORING.

HE is a Real Super Star that knows his onus - score goals and
assist the team to victory...
Smart from a new 105,000,000Euro deal, he just conjured
 up a blazing hat trick

From these signs in the early part of the season and Bale's arrival,
Real Madrid are surely on their way to landing La Decima and
 probably, the La Liga.
I know Real will Win the Champion's league this season.

President al-Assad playing Hide and Seek?

US intel lost over Syria chemical weapons

Reports reaching us from CNN

American intelligence analysts are at odds over what the United States knows about the location of Syria's chemical weapons, CNN has learned.
Disagreement within the intelligence community surfaced over the past few weeks as spy agencies observed Syria - fearing a possible U.S. military strike - moving a significant amount of chemical weaponry, according to two U.S. officials familiar with internal discussions.
The lack of consensus raises concerns about accountability should the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad proceed with its stated intention of turning over chemical stockpiles to international control and creates potential targeting problems should the United States opt for military action, CNN has learned.

At one end of the spectrum, some analysts believe the United States might not be able to verify the location of up to 50 percent of Syria's chemical weapons, the officials said. At the other end, some agencies conclude the United States knows where most of them are stored, both officials said.
The officials declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the information.
Both work in different parts of national security agencies, but outlined the same scenario of widely varying views of intelligence analysts.
Neither would specify precisely which agencies disagree. But until the latest crisis, several administration officials had told journalists - without full attribution - the United States knew the location of most stockpiles.
CNN and other news organizations have reported over the past year that chemical stockpiles had regularly been moved by the regime for security purposes when rebel fighting grew close to storage areas, and that the United States was able to track them using satellites, intercepts and human based intelligence.
One official said the current disagreement about intelligence "shouldn't be a surprise."
He noted an agency like the National Security Agency "is going to listen to intercepts and see it through that lens; the (Defense Intelligence Agency) is going to look at military information and see it through that lens. The CIA likes to think it's looking at the problem holistically."
Intelligence analysis is open to interpretation and opposing views are not uncommon.
In one notable instance, the intelligence community had a range of certainty about whether a compound discovered in Pakistan was indeed Osama bin Laden's hideaway, because they were relying on interpretation of clues but had no photo or sighting of the al Qaeda leader.
Navy SEALs raided the building and killed bin Laden in May 2011.
It will be up to James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, to present President Barack Obama with an overall assessment.
Clapper's office did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.
Analysts often face the dilemma of verifying information through more than one source.
"The majority, if not all of it, is in area controlled by the Assad forces," Secretary of State John Kerry told the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday. "We're going to have to be able to know that it can all be accounted for."
U.S. uncertainty about the location of the weapons began to emerge about two weeks ago.
"Most of the movement was when it looked like a military strike might be imminent," one of the officials said. "We saw significant movement at some sites."
He described this as being within the "12 to 20" major sites the United States watches closely.
Since that time, "everything is locked down," the official said. But he added, "we have less confidence we know where everything is and what might have been moved."
It's not entirely clear what the specific motivation was for moving the weapons at that time, the official said. One theory - the regime may have feared rebels could gain access to them.

Hide and seek, here we go.
What are your views.
Is Assad serious about peace in his domain? May be not...

Real Marketing in Madrid

Real Madrid are really concerned about doing serious business while entertaining fans. Judging by their steady hunt for the best of talents around, they understand what fame can do to your bank account. Florentino Perez, in particular knows exactly how to cash in on an entertainer. He said, "expensive platers pay themselves".

I think this man is thinking.

Yes, for marketing purposes.
As for talent, he will grow into that
We saw him nutmeg CR7 earlier today.
He will do well.

SYRIA RECOVERY

China and Russia welcome Syria joining chemical arms pact

Russian President Vladimir Putin has welcomed Syria's announcement that it had joined a global anti-chemical weapons treaty, saying it showed Damascus was serious in its intention to resolve the conflict.
“I believe we should welcome such a decision,” he told a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit on Friday.
“(It) is an important step towards the resolution of the Syrian crisis; this confirms the serious intention of our Syrian partners to follow this path.”
China's Foreign Ministry too has said that it welcomed a decision by Syria to join the global anti-chemical weapons treaty.
The United Nations said it received a document from Syria on joining the pact, a move Syrian President Bashar al-Assad promised as part of a deal to avoid US air strikes.
The move would end Syria's status as one of only seven nations outside the 1997 international convention that outlaws stockpiling chemical weapons.
Other holdouts include Syria's neighbours Egypt and Israel, as well as North Korea.

That's a GOOD DEVELOPMENT
Next let an election be held in Syria to bring about a change of governance while Assad should go and take
some rest.
What happens after this is left for the Syrians to decide.

Obama wants change through peace way

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama says he long resisted calls for military action in Syria because he didn't think force could solve the Syrian civil war. But he says he changed his mind after Syria's government gassed its own citizens.
Obama on Tuesday used a televised address to the nation to explain his thinking on the ongoing fighting in Syria. He said the use of chemical weapons on Aug. 21 shifted his thinking and that the United States must respond with a military strike to deter future use of such weapons.
Obama said no one disputes that chemical weapons were used and said thousands of Syrians have died from them. He said the images and videos of men, women and children being gassed are sickening and demand a response.

Let's hope Mr Assad obliges...

Online Payment Methods for Nigerians: 5 Ways to Receive Payment From Foreigners (Aside Paypal)

No doubt, Paypal is about the most widely used payment method for online transactions — worldwide. But sadly, Nigerians are no longer allowed to use the service.
This restriction is one of the major worries of Nigerian webmasters and online entrepreneurs. In fact, it is the reason why some Nigerians are yet to start their online businesses.
If you’re finding it hard to receive payment online because Paypal is a no-no for we Nigerians, this post is for you. Here, I’ll be discussing five alternatives to Paypal.
Note that these alternatives may not be perfect replacements for Paypal, but they’ll provide an avenue for you to receive payment from abroad. (Of course, half a loaf is better than no bread.)
alternatives to paypal for nigerians
Now, let’s look at the alternatives you’ve got.

1. Western Union Money Transfer

With this method, you can receive payment from anywhere in the world. If you’re a freelancer, this may be a good option for you — provided you have clients that are understanding.
Note that you must have a valid government-issued ID card (such as an international passport, national identity card, or drivers’ license) before you can receive payments.
Although this payment method is very speedy, it may not suitable for very small payments due to the transfer and transaction charges.

2. Cheque

If you’re planning to venture (or you’re already) into affiliate marketing or Google Adsense, receiving a check may be the best (or even the only) option for you. This option is suitable for freelancers, too.
Once you request your payment (from the company or individual you’re dealing with), a US cheque (check) would be sent to your mailing address, and you can get your cash at any Nigerian bank.
Receiving funds through cheques may take weeks, depending on the bank you use as well as the issuing bank. So, this payment method may not be suitable if you need the funds urgently.
To receive funds via cheques, you must have a domiciliary account (an international banking account that can be used for sending and receiving payments worldwide). You can easily open a domiciliary account with any Nigerian bank, but you must have a valid identity document (international passport, drivers’ license, or national ID card) and other requirements (which vary depending on the bank). You can visit any bank to make enquiries on opening a domiciliary account.
Please note that transaction charges apply to cheques, and these may vary from bank to bank.
WARNING: Have your cheque sent only to a valid mailing address! If your address cannot be traced easily, you may lose your cheque.

3. Bank Wire transfer

This method of payment is very simple: your funds are transferred from the sender’s bank account to your own bank account here in Nigeria. Once again, you’ll need a domiciliary account for you to receive payment through this method.
Though speedy as it may seem, this payment method is not instant. You may have to wait for days to a few weeks before receiving your funds. But the option is suitable for almost everyone in online business.

4. Payoneer Mastercard

This is the coolest option for Nigerians (in my own opinion). With the Payoneer debit MasterCard, you can receive payment from freelance job sites, affiliate networks, individuals, and companies.
To get your Payoneer debit card, you have two options:
  • If you’re going into online freelance business (writing, web design, programming, SEO, graphics design, virtual assistance, translation, etc.) or affiliate marketing, you can request the card through the freelance outsourcing site or affiliate network you want to work with. Elance, Odesk, Freelancer, Markethealth, and Fiverr are examples of Payoneer partners through which you can request your own card.
  • Visit Payoneer’s website to request the card directly.
After your request has been confirmed by the Payoneer support, you’ll be sent an email informing you of the shipment as well as the expected delivery date. (You’d be told to wait for 28 days, but I receive my own cards in less than 20 days. So, it depends on your location in Nigeria.)
WARNING: Payoneer does not deliver to mailboxes. Only residential addresses are allowed. So, use a valid residential address that can be traced easily. If your card gets lost in transit, you may be asked to pay $50 (about N7500) before another card is sent to you.
The Payoneer card allows you to receive direct payment from freelance sites and affiliate networks. Also, individuals can load funds directly to your card from another credit/debit card.
Once you have the funds on your card, you’ll get an email notification from Payoneer, and you can withdraw your funds instantly from any ATM that processes Mastercard-issued cards (I only know of GTB and Zenith bank ATMs at the moment).

5. 2Checkout

Also known as 2CO, this service allows you to integrate a payment system on your website or blog. So, if you sell products or render services online, this option is for you.
Just visit 2checkout.com and register. (Note that you’ll be charged an application fee of $10.) It takes just a few days to get your account approved (they need to confirm that your business is credible). Once your account is approved, you can set up the payment button on your page.
With 2CO, you can receive payment from anyone, regardless of the payment method that person chooses (Paypal, credit/debit card, and over 5 others).
Subsequently, you can withdraw your funds from your 2CO account. Payment is made every Thursday (provided you have up to the minimum release balance) to your Payoneer Mastercard, or your bank (domiciliary) account via check or Wire transfer.
You can find out more information about 2checkout on their FAQ page.
So, if you’ve always thought that online business is impossible without Paypal, I’m sure you now know that there are other options for you. Choose your preferred option and start making cool cash from your online business.

Now, I’m sure you love this…

Yes, I’m sure you love what you just read. In case you didn’t know, this is a new blog, which I started some weeks back with the aim of enlightening Nigerians who want to start online business but don’t know how.
I cringe when I see Nigerian “webmasters” requesting for money before they can disclose details about online business. So, I decided to offer helpful information on this blog — for free.
So, if you want high quality information about various online business options and everything related to making money online, like the Facebook page for this blog (https://www.facebook.com/WebIncomePlus) and subscribe to updates on latest posts (see form on the right). This way, you’ll receive email and Facebook notifications as soon as I share more quality information about online business.

Your turn…

If you have any contributions or questions, share your thoughts by leaving a comment.

Don’t be selfish, please…

Hey, don’t forget to share this post (and other posts on this blog) with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Remember, everyone wants to make money. So, as you try to achieve this dream, help others, too.

ASUU Slams Maku For Saying Its Demands Will Shut Down Nigeria

•Calls Him Ignorant

labaran_makuThe Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has chided Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku for saying Nigeria would shut down if the Federal Government grants all the demands by the striking university lecturers.
ASUU described the minister’s statement as a careless utterance and indication of his ignorance of the agreement between the FG and ASUU.
The union in a statement by Zonal Coordinator, Calabar zone, Dr. Charles Ononuju, urged Nigerians to disregard the statement while asking Maku to apologise to for such unguarded comments and warned him to stop playing politics with the future of the Nigerian child.

ASUU said: “Nigerians should ignore the careless utterance by the Minister of Information that the country will shut down if ASUU’s demand is met. It seems the minister has not seen or read the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement.
“The country has not shut down with constant government wastages and billions of dollars being stolen. The minister should apologise to Nigerians for such unguarded comments and stop playing politics with the future of Nigerian child.”

I THINK ASUU IS OVERDOING THIS...THEY ARE NOT ALSO SAINTS AFTER ALL - Opinion mine.

Lekki-Epe Expressway Contract Buy-Back A Conduit Pipe For Fraud, Lagos PDP Alleges

The decision of the Lagos State Government to buy back the Lekki-Epe Expressway and its toll plazas from the concessionaire as well as acquire the company, Lekki Construction Company (LCC) is giving the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cause for concern because the move is a “belated exercise, a monumental fraud, and diversionary.” The Lagos PDP has therefore called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as well as the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) to commence beam their search light on the contract, insisting that its details were deliberately made secret to Lagos taxpayers. In a statement Sunday, the party’s spokesman, Taofik Gani, alleged that though the buy-back looked commendable on the face value, it is indeed “a big fraud, extortionate and one step meant to enrich the governor and his predecessor ab-initio.” According to him, “this buy-back is an after-thought that cannot cure the fact that ab-initio, the road contract was deliberately imposed on the Lagos State Government to enrich (Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola and his predecessor, two people who are so believed to be behind the toll company. “It is now very imperative to lift the veil of incorporation of the company for the public to know, claiming that the company, like many others in the state, is a front for the governor and his predecessor to steal in government. Stealing in the state has become a norm as far as it is committed by the governor or his predecessor.”
The Lagos PDP further noted that the Fashola-led administration deliberately allowed the toll company to start collection of tolls in a road contract just a bit above 30 per cent completion and particularly lacking the expected coastal road, adding that all the necessities on the road are absent save for the massive, aesthetic toll plazas. Gani spoke further: “We have demanded the details of the road contract and were told the Governor’s Office was keeping it secret while also shielding the toll company.
Our demand is because Lagosians ought to know the terms of such contract and probably critique the absurdities that may be contained therein. “This sudden decision by the governor is thus only diversionary and we demand that he explains why they now have to pay for a road actually constructed by a former governor in 1978 and free of toll plaza.” The party further alleged that, “the decision to buy-back the tainted road contract is just a conduit pipe to convert money into the pockets of the governor and his predecessor, both of whom are now so engrossed in sponsoring the All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to further their ambitions. “We thus call on EFCC and the ICPC to immediately commence a probe into the contract buy-back. We must be told how much has been expended by the operator company on the rehabilitation, how much has been paid, how much is the expected reasonable commission for such investment, and above all, who are the owners of the operator company?” Gani asked.

There must of necessity be a show of transparency in all these matters.
In any way it's a step towards sanity.
